Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by big industrial batteries that need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety measures should always be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be situated close to the charging area. The path to the post should not be obstructed and an injured worker must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Do not allow objects like for instance lighters or matches to be utilized while somebody is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
